For our next Member Spotlight, we have CrossFit Zenith Member #1: Robyne Gioco! Robyne was the first person to actually sign up with us as a full-fledged member. Since then she’s made really great progress, even with the current “jerk pulled my arm out at the Tough Mudder” shoulder injury she’s been having to work around. Whenever she’s here she always (okay, usually) has a big smile on her face and is always willing to help out whenever and however she can. It’s been great getting to know Robyne over the past sixteen months, and now you get to know her a little better too!
- Your Name
- Where did you grow up?
I grew up in a tiny little town in the northern Shenandoah Valley of Virginia called Berryville, made “famous” when Wendy’s filmed a commercial there for their Berry Almond Chicken salad. True story.
- When did you become a member at CrossFit Zenith and what made you join?
I joined the night of the grand opening on October 14, 2013. CrossFit had always intrigued me so after being a couch potato for two years after my Boot Camp class ended, I decided to try it out. I tried a CrossFit that will go unnamed and it just wasn’t a fit. I tried another and was contemplating joining when fate stepped in: A buddy of mine works with Barb and mentioned that she and Brian were opening CFZ. I reached out to Barb and then tried a WOD at their open house and signed up that night. I knew from that moment that this place was different…in a good way! It just felt right.
- What do you do when you are not at CrossFit Zenith? (occupation, hobbies, etc.)
I work at the Yale School of Public Health. I wish I could say I cure things like Ebola and Malaria, but I work in HR. Kind of the same thing. Ha!
Hobbies…I don’t have many but I love to read and I am passionate about animals and animal rescue. I spend my time catering to the every whim of my ‘zoo’, which includes two rescued dachshunds (Bayley and Braydi) and one elderly feline named Jari. Oh yeah, and my husband, David (who is also a CFZ member!). Barb has also recently been patient enough to teach me to sew…and she’s created a monster.
- How did you find out about CrossFit?
A friend of mine in Massachusetts started CrossFit several years ago and I’ve followed her progress. I watched her transform into an athlete who runs marathons, obstacle races, relays and many other events and I wanted that to be me.
- What is your favorite moment at CrossFit Zenith?
My favorite moment is welcoming a new member or a prospective member. I never want someone to feel left out or like our members are part of a clique. I want everyone to have the warm, welcoming and fun experience that I have each time I walk through that purple door.
- What is your favorite workout and least favorite workout?
Favorite is anything that has a kettlebell swing or a thruster in it. Least is a tie between burpees and hang power cleans, both of which make me say bad words.
- Program your perfect WOD
12 minute AMRAP
5 shoulder press/push press/thruster (all lifts I enjoy)
10 abmat situps
15 kettlebell swings
- What is one thing you have done at CrossFit Zenith that you never thought you would do?
Murph. If you ever told me I would do the Murph workout, and complete it in an hour, I would have laughed like a mad woman…but I DID!
- What motivates you during a workout?
Sometimes it’s the music (MORE ROCK, Brian!), sometimes it’s hearing a little voice in my head telling me I can’t do something so I have something to prove, and sometimes I just want to beat David.
- What is something about yourself that we might not know?
I would tell you but then I would have to kill you.
Seriously, I’m an open book but I guess it would be that I’m a giant sap. I cry during movies ALL.THE.TIME. And I refuse to watch any movie where an animal dies: Bambi, Dumbo, Ol’ Yeller…all off limits for me. I make David “preview” a movie before I watch it if there is even the slightest chance an animal may perish in it. Oh, and I detest the Amish and the circus.
- What advice would you give to someone just getting started with CrossFit?
Jump in and DO IT. I hear so many people say, “I’m not in good enough shape”, “I’m too old”, “I can’t lift weights”, “It’s too extreme for me”. NO, NO, NOOOOO…If I can do it, ANYONE CAN. It’s a fantastic workout, you feel great, you meet great people and you connect with your inner badass, which everyone has one…you just have to release it. Joining CFZ was honestly one of the best decisions I ever made. There is not one single workout where I walk away thinking, “I wish I didn’t do that” (even if it has burpees or hang power cleans in it). Give it a try…you will love it!
- You’ve just dropped a 45 lb bumper on your foot and you’re surrounded by first graders. What’s the first word out of your mouth?
- If you could pry the controller out of SqWatts’ hands, what music would we be working out to?
Soundgarden and Audioslave (duh); Guns n’ Roses; Rage Against the Machine; Halestorm; Katy Perry (shut up)
